"What goes up must come down." Ever heard that saying? If taken literally, it is just referring to gravity, or if taken metaphorically, that a crash always follows a high, but let's look at it in the golf swing today. If I can get a little nerdy with y'all for a sec, I'd like to talk about the energy between positions 2 and 4 in your swing. There are two main types of energy in the physics world, kinetic and potential. The former refers to literal energy, an object in motion, while the latter, potential energy, is all about energy stored within an object due to its position. If you were to pick something up around you and lift it up, it now has potential energy. When you drop it, it has kinetic energy as it falls. See where I'm going with this? At the very top of your backswing, your club reaches its maximum potential energy, and the more of it you can get, the better. As it comes down, kinetic energy is generated and subsequently transferred to the ball. This is as much of a full swing tip as it is a flexibility tip, as the further back you're able to reach, the better. Join us as Tim Graves, PGA, explains more.
