When it comes to the kinematic sequence, and motion in general, there is a bit of a paradox that goes on. You'd think that exerting more effort would result in more power or more speed, but really it's the opposite that happens. Tension in your body when you swing, in today's case in your grip, kills speed, and there are a few reasons for that, but there is one in particular I'd like to focus on here. When you tighten your grip, you're really tightening your whole arm. Do me a favor, hold up your hand in front of you, open for now. Clench your fist, and you should see a visible flex of the muscles in your forearm. That tightening of your grip will translate into a tightening of your entire arm, and thus, limit your range of motion. With less range of motion, your ability to generate speed and power is limited. Join Tim Graves, PGA, as he explains why you've got to stay loose to go fast.
